This pita sandwich recipe makes the perfect replacement when classics like PB&J are losing their luster.
Introduction

This pita sandwich is a bit of a show-off, but you can hardly blame it when it’s so juicy, crunchy, sweet and ever-so-slightly spicy. It makes a terrific midterm replacement when the classics are losing their luster. (We still love you, PB&J and ham and cheese!)

Classic Cereal Snack Mix

Often known as Nuts and Bolts, this snack recipe is great for parties all year-round and to take with you on-the-go.
Introduction

This recipe, often known as Nuts and Bolts, is THE quintessential Canadian Christmas party snack; however, I make them regularly throughout the year for parties as this mix can take the heat and isn't perishable in the sun. This recipe is cheaper and so much tastier than all the store-bought party mixes and will conjure up fond childhood memories for most of us. We like ours heavy on the garlic (that whole Ukrainian thing; you can't escape it) so I use the full 3 tablespoons of garlic powder in mine.

You can also substitute in other items such as Cheezies at a 1:1 ratio: remove 1 cup of cereal from the original recipe, then add in 1 cup of the substitution. As for the additional spices, simply add them to the mixture!

Montreal-Style Bagels

Wondering how to make Montreal bagels at home? Get started with this recipe for Feast.
Introduction

In doing research for the book, we came across a website called the Wandering Chew, run by two friends named Sydney Warshaw and Kat Romanow. Their goal is to create new Jewish food experiences in Montreal with events like Mexican Jewish and Iraqi Jewish pop-up dinners and their “Beyond the Bagel” walking tour. After poring over their website, we knew two things: we wanted to be friends with them, and they had to be in the book! Much to our delight, Kat and Sydney said they’d be happy to contribute, and they developed this recipe for bagels, a Jewish food near the top of the Montreal culinary canon. For anyone who doesn’t live near St-Viateur Bagel or Fairmount Bagel but wishes they did, these are for you.

Grown-Up Ice Cream Sundaes

This ice cream recipe with Scotch, coffee, dark chocolate and flaky salt is a sophisticated adult-only treat.
Introduction

Ice cream is everyone’s fall-back dessert, the one we serve when there’s no time to bake. But if you have just a few more minutes, you can easily make chocolate ganache to pour all over it, thus turning ice cream into something fancy. To increase the sophistication, I make this deliberately not kid-friendly and add all the things kids can’t, won’t or shouldn’t consume—Scotch, coffee, dark chocolate and flaky salt. Not only do these ingredients make the dish complex and delicious, but they also make it feel more thoughtful and special.

I use Scotch because it’s what we love and have on hand in my house, but you can substitute any best-quality spirits you like, from bourbon or brandy to Baileys or Kahlúa.

Decadent No-Dairy Ice Cream

Delight your guests with this completely customizable homemade dairy-free ice cream at your next dinner party.
Introduction

I serve ice cream with Chocolate Magic Shell (page 270), Maple Caramel (page 274), and a bunch of chopped fruit, nuts, coconut, and other toppings as a dinner party dessert all the time. Guests get to have exactly what they like, and the childhood birthday party nostalgia puts a smile on everyone’s face. I came up with this recipe after my ice cream maker seemed to stop working. I often make a banana “soft serve” by blitzing slices of frozen banana in my food processor, so I thought I could employ a similar strategy with a cashew-and-coconut-based ice cream. And it really works! I make the ice cream base, freeze it in ice cube molds, and then “churn” the frozen cubes into ice cream with a bit of water. From there, you can enjoy it as a decadent soft serve or you can scrape it into a container for a hard freeze. Delicious either way!
